The high number of votes means the poll, now in its fifth year, has beaten the overall record of 1.2 million set last year. However, with four days left to vote, there is still plenty of time for users of uefa.com, Europe's football website, to have their say about the players who made their mark in Europe over the last 12 months.
Sixty players and managers have been nominated for 12 positions, including coach, and the final team will be announced on 16 January, three days after voting concludes. The nominees were chosen by uefa.com staff, with players selected for their overall performances either for a European club or national side, or in a UEFA club competition in 2005.
Once the Team of the Year has been named, uefa.com will bring you interviews with members of the élite eleven and the winning coach ahead of the resumption of the UEFA Champions League in February. uefa.com editor-in-chief David Farrelly said: "The greatest critics are normally the fans and we are delighted they are taking the opportunity to exercise their right to participate in the 2005 Team of the Year vote."
The uefa.com Team of the Year is not intended to rival more established awards, and does not bear the official UEFA imprimatur. Nevertheless, it has already proved hugely popular with fans, and more than seven million votes have been cast in previous polls.
Users can vote by accessing www.uefa.com and clicking on the Team of the Year banner that opens the extensive Team of the Year section. This includes profiles, video compilations and photo galleries for every player.
