With defending champions Sporting Clube de Portugal eliminated in the first round by the Welsh side Cardiff City AFC, another new name was to be engraved on the trophy. And, whereas 3,200 had watched the 1964 final, a crowd of 100,000 was at Wembley Stadium to watch a London team, West Ham United FC, take on German rivals, TSV 1860 München. The final pitted two famous coaches – Ron Greenwood and Max Merkel – against each other and, 14 months later, West Ham's majestic defender Bobby Moore, midfielder Martin Peters and striker Geoff Hurst were again too much for German opposition at the same venue in the FIFA World Cup final.

Play-off required
TSV 1860 München, having scraped past FC Porto in the first round, battled mightily with AC Torino in the semi-final. After losing 2-0 in Italy, they won 3-1 at home and, with the away-goal rule still non-existent, clinched their passport to Wembley with a 2-0 play-off victory on a rain-soaked pitch in Zürich.

Sealey strikes
The final was one of the best. German internationals Rudi Brunnenmeier and Peter Grosser, when they pierced the defence superbly marshalled by Bobby Moore, found the West Ham goalkeeper, Jim Standen, in excellent form. In the end, it was unsung winger Alan Sealey - he sadly died in 1996 - who gave the 'Hammers' the edge. He sent the claret-and-blue ranks wild by scoring after 70 minutes and sealed the Germans' fate with a second just two minutes later. The remaining football was accompanied by raucous chanting of the West Ham theme tune "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles".
