Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Liverpool FC (aet)
Hampden Park, Glasgow

A record entry of 31 teams included the first-ever Soviet participant, Dinamo Kiev. With holders West Ham United FC, Liverpool FC and Celtic FC in the semi-finals, a British triumph seemed probable. But the 'odd man out' – Borussia Dortmund – made off with the silverware.

Difficult passage
Liverpool, coached by the inimitable Scot, Bill Shankly, had seen off Juventus FC in the first round and dashed Celtic's hopes of contesting the final on home territory at Hampden Park by winning a fiercely-contested semi-final 2-1 on aggregate. Meanwhile, Dortmund were seeing off West Ham 5-2 on aggregate in a tie which brought Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst face to face with Hans Tilkowsky, 'Sigi' Held and Lothar Emmerich, players who would meet two months later in the World Cup final.

Libuda's extra-time winner
Before 42,000 spectators in Glasgow, both sides under-performed in a final which only caught fire after Sigi Held had put the Germans ahead in the 62nd minute. Six minutes later, Liverpool's durable and hard-working front-man, Roger Hunt, pulled the Englishmen level. The stalemate persisted until the end of normal time but Dortmund had more bite in attack against an unusually vulnerable Liverpool defence and tricky winger Reinhard 'Stan' Libuda grabbed the winner in the 109th minute with a shot which took a wicked deflection off a defender and sailed over Tommy Lawrence in the Liverpool goal. Borussia Dortmund was the first German name to be engraved on the trophy.
