Athens to have final say in 2007
Friday 19 May 2006An eventful UEFA Champions League season came to a conclusion on Wednesday in Paris, and the honour of hosting next season's final falls on another European football hotbed in Athens.
Olympic Stadium
The Greek capital's Olympic Stadium will stage the 2006/07 showpiece on 23 May 2007 - its first European final since the venue was rebuilt to hold the 2004 Olympic Games. Athens previously staged the 1993/94 final, when AC Milan defeated FC Barcelona 4-0 at the OAKA Spiros Louis stadium. The 1986/87 UEFA European Cup Winners' Cup also came to a conclusion at that venue, as AFC Ajax defeated 1. FC Lokomotiv Leipzig 1-0.
Major revamp
Having hosted the first modern Olympics of 1896, Athens underwent a major revamp for the 2004 Games. An airport and metro system were built while the flagship Olympic Stadium was completely renovated. The 72,000-seat arena was upgraded by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and now features a distinctive new roof.
