Frankfurt suffer Künzer setback
Tuesday 11 October 2005German international Nia Künzer has been ruled out of 1. FFC Frankfurt's UEFA Women's Cup quarter-finals second leg against Arsenal LFC after undergoing surgery on her right knee meniscus.
Latest setback
The 25-year-old picked up the injury in the first encounter between the sides in London on Saturday and is likely to be ruled out for several weeks. It is the latest setback of an injury-plagued season for Künzer, and Frankfurt's general manager Siegfried Dietrich is hoping for a speedy return. "This is a bitter blow for Nia because she had just recovered from a torn cruciate ligament," he said. "Our club and the players hope that she will be able to return soon."
Key absentee
The quarter-final tie against Arsenal is level at 1-1 going into the second leg in Frankfurt on Sunday, and the home side will have to be at their best to deny the English champions. However, they must do so without Künzer - the woman famed for scoring the golden goal that clinched the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup for Germany against Sweden.
