Korean comeback checks Greece
Saturday 21 January 2006Greece 1-1 Korea Republic
Theodoros Zagorakis' early strike was not enough to earn Greece victory against the Korea Republic in the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in the opening match of a four-team friendly tournament.
Early lead
The European champions took the lead in Riyadh after ten minutes when Zagorakis pounced on a weak clearance to unleash a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area. Greece came close to doubling their lead ten minutes later but Dimitrios Papadopoulos saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line.
Nikopolidis heroics
South Korea scored their equaliser four minutes later courtesy of a header by Park Chu-Young. Chances thereafter were few and far between although Lee Dong-Gook missed a glorious opportunity to give the Koreans victory, spurning a 71st-minute penalty, while Greek goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis kept out late efforts from Kim Do-Hoen and Choi Jin-Cheul to earn his side a draw. Hosts Saudi Arabia take on Finland tonight in the other match in the opening round of fixtures.
