With defending champions Slovan Bratislava CHZJD trounced by NK Dinamo Zagreb in the first round, it was left to Polish side KS Górnik Zabrze to raise an Eastern European flag at the final. However, they were beaten by a Manchester City FC side, astutely coached by Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, which contained skilful midfielders such as Colin Bell and Neil Young, dangerous winger Mike Summerbee and all-action striker Francis Lee. Their attacking power was underlined in the semi-final against FC Schalke 04 when, after losing 1-0 in Germany, they won 5-1 at Maine Road.
Fortune favours Górnik
The Górnik Zabrze squad included the finest Polish footballer of his day, striker Wlódzimierz Lubanski. After beating serious rivals Olympiakos Piraeus FC and Rangers FC, they reached the final in bizarre fashion. Both matches against AS Roma ended as 1-1 draws, so the second leg in Chorzów went into extra-time. Both sides scored and AS Roma thought the 2-2 draw gave them the tie on away goals. It was then discovered that the away goals rule only applied to normal time. After another 1-1 draw in a play-off in Strasbourg, Górnik won on the toss of a coin.
Rainstorm
The final was played in a rainstorm which restricted the crowd to 8,000. Neil Young put Manchester City ahead after 11 minutes and ‘Franny’ Lee added a penalty two minutes before the break. A brave Górnik revival produced a goal by Stanislaw Oslizlo with 20 minutes to go, but the English side’s captain, Tony Book, lifted the cup under the protection of an umbrella!
