Kharkiv
Tuesday 4 September 2007Located in the north-east of the country, the first capital of the Soviet-era Ukraine is the nation's second largest city with a population of around 1.5 million. An important centre for industry and education, 70 per cent of Kharkiv was destroyed during the second world war, with the city changing hands no fewer than six times. The city boasts several well-supported football clubs, with FC Metalist Kharkiv reaching the quarter-finals of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup.
