Located in the east of the country, close to the border with Russia, approximately one million people live in a city which is the industrial centre of Ukraine - over 200 engineering countries are based in Donetsk along with 20,000 medium and small-sized organisations. Founded in 1869, it is beautifully surrounded by forests, hills, rivers and lakes, and is also home to many festivals and contests in the field of culture and science. FC Shakhtar Donetsk are one of the 'big two' in Ukraine, and regularly compete with FC Dynamo Kyiv for domestic supremacy.
