The northernmost of the eight host cities for UEFA EURO 2012™, Gdansk is situated on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. This thousand-year-old town is the principal sea port of the country, and has a population of approximately 450,000 people. Jointly with Gdynia, Sopot and a few minor localities, Gdansk is part of the coastal agglomeration called Trójmiasto, although on its own it is the biggest economic, research and cultural centre of the Polish coastal area. On top of this, Gdansk is both a green city with many gardens and parks, and a cultural one with many exhibitions, concerts and museums. Lechia Gdańsk, the city's major football team, won the Polish Cup in 1983 and first competed in European football the following season.
