Madrid win with three points
Uruguayan side CA Peñarol proved to be no match for all-star Real Madrid CF in the first edition of the European/South American Cup, with Ferenc Puskás scoring twice in a second-leg rout after the Spanish side earned a 0-0 draw in Montevideo.
Good goalkeeping
Madrid won 7-3 against Eintracht Frankfurt to claim their fifth successive European Champion Clubs' Cup a few weeks earlier but found Peñarol harder to break down in the first leg at the Centenario Stadium, where Uruguay had won the FIFA World Cup 30 years earlier. However, despite encouragement from a crowd of over 70,000, Peñarol goalkeeper Luis Maidana and his Madrid counterpart Rogelio Domínguez managed to keep the first leg goalless to earn a point for each side.
Madrid rout
The second leg was a different story. At the Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid tore at Peñarol from the start were three goals ahead within nine minutes, with two goals from Puskás either side of an Alfredo Di Stéfano effort. A minute before the interval Chus Herrera scored a fourth with Francesco Gento delighting a 90,000-strong crowd with a fifth after half-time. Carlos Borges pulled a goal back for Peñarol with 20 minutes to play, but Madrid were not to be denied the two points allocated to winners in those days and won the competition.
