1962: Brilliant Pelé sparks Santos stroll
Thursday 11 October 1962Santos FC 3-2 SL Benfica
SL Benfica 2-5 Santos
Santos win with four points
European champions for a second year in succession, SL Benfica lost their second European/South American Cup in a row with Pelé scoring five times over two legs to give Santos FC their first intercontinental title.
Santos strike
Pelé struck twice in a closely contested first leg in the Maracaná Stadium in Rio de Janeiro with the Brazilian side running out 3-2 winners. Still only 21, he put Santos ahead on 31 minutes, but Joaquim Santana drew Benfica level with 58 minutes played. Further goals from Coutinho (64) and Pelé (85) made sure of a home victory but a second late strike by Santana suggested that Benfica could not be ruled out of the tie just yet.
Pelé brilliance
Back in Lisbon, however, the Portuguese side were outclassed by a Pelé-inspired Santos who romped to a 5-2 victory. Pelé struck in the 15th and 25th minutes as Santos seized the early momentum before second-half goals from Coutinho (48), Pelé again (64), to complete his hat-trick, and Pepe (77) completed the rout. Eusébio and Santana replied late on for Benfica, but the European/South American Cup was heading to Brazil for the first time.
