Santos win after a play-off
Brazil's Santos FC became the first side to retain the European/South American Cup in 1963 but it took a play-off for them to overcome AC Milan in Rio de Janeiro.
Amarildo impresses
European champions for the first time following a 2-1 win against SL Benfica in the 1962/63 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, Milan had a Brazilian to thank for their first-leg triumph with Amarildo – who had replaced the injured Pelé in the 1962 FIFA World Cup final – scoring twice at San Siro. Giovanni Trapattoni and Amarildo struck before the break, with the latter registering again after Pelé had replied for Santos, and Bruno Mora made it 4-1 before Pelé converted a late penalty.
Dramatic decider
Pelé and midfielder Zito missed the return fixture through injury, and Milan took advantage with José Altafini (12) and Mora (17) putting them 2-0 up. However, two Pepe free-kicks (50 & 68) either side of goals from Almir (54) and Lima (65) gave Santos a 4-2 win. The play-off two days later was decided by a Dalmo penalty (31), after Milan captain Cesare Maldini was sent off for a foul on Almir, and the Italian side also lost goalkeeper Luigi Balzarini to injury following a collision with Almir, while Santos held on despite playing the second half with ten men after Ismael's dismissal.
