Inter win after a play-off
FC Internazionale Milano became the first Italian side to win the European/South American Cup in 1964 as Mario Corso's extra-time goal defeated Argentina's CA Independiente in a play-off at the Santiago Bernabéu.
'Grande Inter'
Fresh from winning the first of three successive scudettos and their first European Champion Clubs' Cup – beating Real Madrid CF 3-1 in the final – Helenio Herrera's 'Grande Inter' slipped up in the first game against Independiente. Tomás Rolan's dismissal gave the Italians a man advantage, but Giuliano Sarti uncharacteristically let a weak shot from Mario Rodríguez dribble over the line 12 minutes after the restart as the Argentinian side claimed a 1-0 win.
Decisive strike
A second game with defences on top in Milan levelled the tie, with first-half goals from Alessandro Mazzola (8) and Corso (34) giving the Nerazzurri two points, and a decider was scheduled for Madrid three days later. Independiente started brightly, but Sarti in the Inter goal kept the Argentinian side out, allowing his side to win the trophy in the 110th minute. Aurelio Milani found Joaquín Peiró who crossed to Corso and the striker controlled the ball on his chest before smashing it into the net. Back in Milan, fans flocked to the Piazza Del Duomo to celebrate – Inter were on top of the world.
