1966: Peñarol lay Madrid ghost
Wednesday 26 October 1966CA Peñarol 2-0 Real Madrid CF
Real Madrid CF 0-2 CA Peñarol
Peñarol win with four points
CA Peñarol avenged their defeat against the same opponents in the inaugural European/South American Cup final in 1960 with a comfortable victory against a Real Madrid CF side who had won their sixth European Champion Clubs' Cup earlier in 1966, beating FK Partizan in the final.
Spencer strikes
The Uruguayan side took two points from the home leg of the competition, Alberto Spencer scoring a goal in each half having also been on the scoresheet when Peñarol beat SL Benfica in the second leg of the 1961 intercontinental final. The dismissal of defender Enrique 'Pachín' Pérez made matters even harder for Madrid, since it meant he would be suspended for the return fixture.
Inspirational Rocha
Sure enough Peñarol took full advantage with Pedro Rocha, inspirational in both legs, opening the scoring from the penalty spot on 28 minutes before Spencer added the second eight minutes before half-time. The victory made Peñarol only the second South American side after Santos FC in 1962 and 1963 to win the competition twice.
