Milan win 4-2 on aggregate

The 1969 European/South American Cup final was a tough affair, with AC Milan winning on aggregate after a bruising trip to Argentina for the second leg.

Confident start
Having beaten AFC Ajax 4-1 to win their second European title, Milan oozed confidence in the first game against Estudiantes on 8 September 1969. Angelo Sormani opened the scoring on eight minutes and, after Néstor Combin had doubled the lead moments before half-time, added his second and Milan's third of the night midway through the second half. The match ended 3-0 to send the Italian side into the the second leg in good heart.

Injury disruptions
Milan, however, were disrupted by injuries to Pierino Prati and Combin in Argentina yet still took the lead on the half-hour when Gianni Rivera put the European champions four-up on aggregate. Aguirre Suárez and Marcos Conigliaro turned the game in the favour of Estudiantes but the depleted visitors held out under extreme pressure to lift the title for the first time, making up for their defeat by Brazilian side Santos FC in the 1963 competition and taking the trophy back to Europe for the first time in four years.
