1971: Artime puts paid to Panathinaikos
Wednesday 29 December 1971Panathinaikos FC 1-1 Club Nacional de Football
Club Nacional de Football 2-1 Panathinaikos FC
Nacional win 3-2 on aggregate
With European champions AFC Ajax declining to take part, Panathinaikos FC defended the continent's honour in the 1971 European/South American Cup only to suffer defeat against Uruguay's Club Nacional de Football.
Ajax withdraw
Ajax allowed the side they beat in the 1971 European Champion Clubs' Cup to take on Nacional for the intercontinental title in December, giving Panathinaikos coach Ferenc Puskás the chance to revisit a competition having scored two goals in Real Madrid CF's victory in the inaugural event in 1960. Antonis Antoniadis missed two first-half chances as Panathinaikos sought to exploit home advantage in the first leg, before Mimis Domazos crossed for Totis Fylakouris to put them ahead four minutes after the break. Greek joy was short-lived, however, Luis Artime levelling on the counterattack with a fine left-foot shot.
Second leg
The game was marred by a serious injury to Giannis Tomaras, who had his leg broken by a late challenge, and Panathinaikos were never quite the same. In the return leg in Montevideo, Artime struck in the 34th and 74th minutes to put Nacional firmly in control, and while Fylakouris pulled a goal back in the final minute, it came too late for Panathinaikos to deny the Uruguayan side the intercontinental title.
