Bayern win 2-0 on aggregate

Having witdrawn from the previous two editions of the competition, FC Bayern München celebrated winning their third successive European Champion Clubs' Cup by taking their first intercontinental title.

Third chance
Bayern pulled out of the 1974 and 1975 editions of the European/South American Cup after winning their first two European titles, but having beaten AS Saint-Etienne to become European champions in 1976 they elected to compete for the intercontinental tie, the first German side to do so. Brazilian side Cruzeiro EC were the opposition in snowy Munich for the first leg in November 1976.

'Der Bomber'
An all-star Bayern side featuring the likes of Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were kept at bay by some determined Cruzeiro defending until Gerd Müller, –known as 'Der Bomber' and the greatest goalscorer in German football history – broke the deadlock on 80 minutes. Jupp Kappellman added a second two minutes later and, with no goals in the second leg in Belo Horizonte in December, Bayern prevailed comfortably.
