1977: Boca Juniors brush aside Mönchengladbach

VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 0-3 CA Boca Juniors
Boca Juniors win 5-2 on aggregate
The European/South American Cup returned to the other side of the Atlantic for the first time since 1973 as CA Boca Juniors got the better of European representatives VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach with a resounding, if unexpected, away win.
Stand-in contenders
Udo Lattek's Mönchengladbach side stood in for European champions Liverpool FC, who had beaten them to claim the 1977 European Champion Clubs' Cup but declined the opportunity to compete for the intercontinental title. The German team looked well set after the away leg in March 1978. Ernesto Mastrángelo gave the Argentinian side the lead but Wilfried Hannes equalised and Rainer Bonhof put Mönchengladbach ahead before substitute Jorge Daniel Ribolzi levelled at 2-2.
Rusty Mönchengladbach
The Bundesliga club therefore had every right to believe the ball was in their court as the second leg was played at Karlsruher SC's Wildpark Stadium four months later, but a lack of full fitness showed in what was a pre-season game for Lattek's team. Goals from Darío Felman, Mastrángelo and Carlos Salinas earned the visitors an unexpected 3-0 victory and took the trophy back to Argentina again.
