Club Olimpia win 3-1 on aggregate

Malmö FF stood in for European champions Nottingham Forest FC in the 1979 European/South American Cup but the Swedish side found Paraguay's Club Olimpia too strong.

Low attendance
Once Forest had opted not to contest the intercontinental competition it was left to Malmö, the team Brian Clough's men had beaten 1-0 in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final, to take on Luis Cubilla's Club Olimpia over two legs for the intercontinental title. What proved to be the last two-legged edition of the fixture kicked off in Sweden, with Evaristo Isasi scoring the only goal for the visitors four minutes before the interval.

Asuncion rematch
A crowd of 35,000 turned up for the return leg, played in March – nearly four months after the opening fixture – and watched Alicio Solalinde extend the home team's advantage in the tie with a 40th-minute penalty. Ingemar Erlandsson scored the Swedish side's only goal of the tie four minutes after the break, but any hopes of a Malmö comeback were ended when Miguel Michelagnoli struck on 71 minutes to settle the tie in the favour of the Asuncion side.
