CA Peñarol 2-0 Aston Villa FC

Uruguay's CA Peñarol became the first club to win the European/South American Cup for a third time with victory against Aston Villa FC, whose defeat made them the third English club in as many years to return from Tokyo empty-handed.

Free-kick winner
Villa, whose surprise 1-0 victory in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final against FC Bayern München in Rotterdam the previous May had enabled them to compete in the fixture for the first time, got off to an enterprising start, midfielder Gordon Cowans striking the crossbar after just two minutes. Before long, however, Peñarol began to get the measure of their opponents and on 27 minutes took the lead when their Brazilian playmaker Jair dipped a long-range free-kick over the Villa wall, the ball entering the net via Jimmy Rimmer's fingertips and the inside of the post.

Jair dazzles
Jair was to be the game's outstanding individual, earning a car having been voted as the official Man of the Match, but it was an error in the Villa defence that led to the Uruguayan side doubling their lead midway through the second half. Peñarol striker Walkir Silva profited from a mix-up between Rimmer and centre-back Alan Evans to slot in from a tight angle and effectively settle the contest.

Historic hat-trick
Peñarol's wild celebrations at the final whistle, and for some time beyond, reflected their elation at claiming a historic hat-trick. It had been 16 years since their previous victory – a two-legged triumph against Real Madrid CF – and their success in Tokyo maintained South America's dominance, with no European club having lifted the trophy since Bayern in 1976.
