Grêmio FBPA 2-1 Hamburger SV (aet)

Europe's Tokyo drought continued as a depleted Hamburger SV lost to Brazilian club Grêmio FBPA, going down 2-1 after extra time in the Olympic Stadium. Right-winger Renato proved to be the South American side's match-winner with both of his team's goals.

Close contest
Grêmio arrived early in Tokyo after a special three-week training camp, while Hamburg were deprived of many of their leading players, including influential German international full-back Manfred Kaltz. The teams proved to be well matched, however, and clear chances were at a premium until the Brazilian side took the lead 37 minutes in, Renato beating a couple of defenders before shooting inside the near post from a narrow angle.

Late equaliser
Hamburg's equaliser came late – five minutes before the end of normal time – as young midfield star Manfred Schröder converted from close range following a free-kick from European Champion Clubs' Cup final hero Felix Magath. The last word went to Renato, however, who skilfully converted Tarciso's cross three minutes into extra time to extend Europe's winless run in the competition to seven years.

'We were finished'
While Renato took the plaudits and spoke of his "huge honour" in winning the Man of the Match award, Hamburg's players were left tired and dejected. "Their second goal was a killer, coming when it did," lamented Schröder, while centre-back turned emergency striker Dietmar Jakobs added: "When they scored in extra time we were finished. We'd given it everything in the second half and got our equaliser but had no more to offer after that."
