CA Independiente 1-0 Liverpool FC

CA Independiente striker José Percudani scored the only goal of the game as Liverpool FC lost their second European/South American Cup final in four years in Tokyo on 9 December 1984.

Fifth straight triumph
Percudani was sent clear of the Liverpool defence by Claudio Marangoni's superbly-flighted pass and darted through on goal before shooting low beyond the advancing Reds goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar. Some resolute Independiente defending ensured that strike was made to count as the South American champions won the competition for the fifth successive year since its format was altered to a single match in 1980.

Winless run
In all, a European side had not won the European/South American Cup since 1976, when FC Bayern München lifted the trophy, while the victory was Independiente's second in the intercontinental tie, their first coming in 1973. Liverpool had defeated AS Roma on penalties to win the European Champion Clubs' Cup final for a fourth time in Rome seven months earlier.
