1987: Porto the pride of Portugal
Sunday 13 December 1987FC Porto 2-1 CA Peñarol (aet)
FC Porto became the first Portuguese side to win the European/South American Cup thanks to a thrilling 2-1 extra-time victory against Uruguay's CA Peñarol in Tokyo.
Madjer winner
In front of 45,000, Algerian Rabah Madjer scored the winner with a superb solo effort on 109 minutes, breaking the deadlock after the match had ended 1-1 in normal time. Fernando Gomes had given Porto the lead three minutes before the break, only for Ricardo Viera to hit back for the South American champions ten minutes from time. Madjer, however, had the final say to deny Peñarol a fourth victory in the competition.
Snow storm
Porto had to battle with the large time difference, but a more surprising challenge was the pitch, bright white after a typical snowstorm before becoming increasingly heavy. However, a team boasting Portuguese, Polish, Brazilian and Algerian internationals made light of the conditions, with star striker Gomes, who had missed his side's European Champion Clubs' Cup success against FC Bayern München through injury, striking the opening goal after 42 minutes.
Madjer magic
Peñarol hit back ten minutes from time when Viera scored from a corner. That signalled extra time and Madjer. who had also struck in the European Cup triumph earlier in the year, proved to be the match-winner. Club president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, remembers Porto's meticulous preparation. "Before we travelled we went to a hotel and set our watches to Tokyo time to adapt more easily," he said. "We slept during the day and got up at night." That planning paid off in style on 13 December 1987.
