Alessandro Del Piero struck nine minutes from time as Juventus defeated CA River Plate to clinch the European/South American Cup on 26 November 1996.
New look
The 22-year-old fired in from close range after a corner from the right had been flicked into his path, taking one touch to control the ball before picking his spot beyond Roberto Oscar Bonano in the River goal. Juventus had beaten AFC Ajax on penalties five months earlier to win the UEFA Champions League, but Marcello Lippi's side had undergone major changes since then. Gianluca Vialli and Fabrizio Ravenelli were the significant summer departures, making way for the likes of Christian Vieri, Zinédine Zidane, Alen Bokšić and Paolo Montero. All but Vieri featured at the National Stadium in Tokyo, but it was Del Piero who sparked the celebrations as Juve clinched the title for a second time having also triumphed in 1985.
