Goals in each half from Michael Zorc and Heiko Herrlich ensured BV Borussia Dortmund followed up their UEFA Champions League triumph with victory against Cruzeiro EC in the European/South American Cup.
Zorc opener
Dortmund had defeated Juventus 3-1 to claim the European crown the previous May and they soon found their stride at the National Stadium in Tokyo. Andreas Möller was the architect of the first goal on 34 minutes, bursting clear on the left of the area then crossing to the far post where Zorc fired in from close range after the ball had eluded the Cruzeiro defence.
Herrlich strikes
Cruzeiro's hopes of getting back into the match were dealt a severe blow with the dismissal of Vítor on 82 minutes and Dortmund made their man advantage tell just two minutes later. Paolo Sousa won the ball on the right midway inside the Cruzeiro half and dashed forward before whipping in a low cross that Herrlich turned into the net.
'Passion, heart and soul'
"My team played with passion, heart and soul," Dortmund coach Nevio Scala said. "I'm proud of my players." Club president Dr Gerd Niebaum added: "It was just one match, but it reinforced our victory in the UEFA Champions League final. The way we won this match showed the world that we didn't win the [European] title by accident."
