FC Bayern München added the world crown to their German and European titles by overcoming ten-man CA Boca Juniors 1-0 after extra time in the European/South American Cup in Tokyo.
Kuffour scores
Ghanaian defender Samuel Kuffour scored the decisive goal 19 minutes into the extra period, firing in from close range after Ciriaco Sforza's corner had precipitated a goalmouth scramble. Thorsten Fink's header was blocked on the goalline by defender Clemente Rodríguez but Kuffour was in the right place to secure Bayern's second victory in this competition, 25 years after their defeat of Brazil's Cruzeiro EC.
Delgado dismissed
Copa Libertadores champions Boca had defeated Real Madrid CF to claim the European/South American Cup in 2000 and were looking to win the competition for a third time, but their hopes were seriously dented on the stroke of half-time when Marcelo Delgado was shown a second yellow card for simulation. It was via penalty shoot-outs that both sides won their respective continental titles and in a match of little attacking fluency, punctuated by nine yellow cards, it seemed the crowd at Tokyo's National Stadium were set for more of the same. Without injured playmaker Steffen Effenberg, Bayern created few opportunities, coming closest in the first half when Giovane Elber shot wide.
Delgado chance
Boca's inspiration came from playmaker Juan Román Riquelme and forward Guillermo Schelotto, the latter sending Delgado racing through on 28 minutes only for goalkeeper Oliver Kahn to deny him with a sliding tackle just outside the area. Moments later Schelotto dispossessed Kuffour and his pass left Delgado with just Kahn to beat but the striker snatched at his shot which trickled wide.
Kuffour strikes
Things got worse for Delgado on the stroke of half-time as he collected his second booking, passing the advantage to Bayern, yet only in the closing stages of the second half did they really threaten, Claudio Pizarro foiled by the foot of Boca goalkeeper Oscar Córdoba after Sforza's quick free-kick had put him through. Bayern pressed in extra time and substitute Carsten Jancker twice missed good opportunities, before Kuffour struck the decisive blow.
