Amirzhan Mukhanov
Wednesday 2 July 2008Amirzhan Mukhanov is a prominent figure in Kazakhstani futsal and made history by being the first coach to lead a national side from the former Soviet republic to a UEFA final tournament.
Mukhanov began his career with football team FC Shakhtyor Karagandy, playing in defence and midfield, and was capped by the Kazakhstan Under-21 side in Soviet competitions. He later went on to play at amateur level, and moved into futsal coaching in 2001 with MFK Tulpar Karagandy (now Tulpar-Ikar).
He proved a success, with his side finishing as league runners-up three times and winning the 2003/04 Kazakhstan Cup. Mukhanov was appointed Kazakhstan coach for the 2008 UEFA European Under-21 Futsal Championship and with a spine of Tulpar-Ikar players he became the first man to lead a squad from his country to a UEFA national-team final tournament. In October he also took over the senior Kazakhstan team on a caretaker basis after Boris Glushkov resigned.
