The 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup itook place in Brazil from 30 September-19 October. Brazil followed in the footsteps of previous hosts the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Spain, Guatemala and Chinese Taipei. Twenty teams took part, with games in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.

Spain omen
Six European teams qualified for the tournament; holders Spain, Russia, Italy, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Portugal. They were drawn along with the other 14 entrants into four groups of five teams. The Czech Republic and Portugal fell in the first group stage and Ukraine were knocked out in the second. In the semi-finals Russia lost 4-2 to Brazil while Spain defeated Italy 3-2 in last second of extra time. Brazil beat Spain on penalties to win the title for the fourth time after a 12-year wait; their opponents had been successful in 2000 and 2004.
