Intertoto countdown begins

-

After the success of the revamped UEFA Intertoto Cup last summer, the countdown to the 2007 edition has begun with the confirmation of the format.

Fifty entries
The competition still consists of three two-legged rounds, with the eleven winners in the final stage progressing to the UEFA Cup second qualifying round. Of the 50 nations eligible to enter one club each, 28 will begin the first round on 23/24 June and 30 June/1 July, including a team from Montenegro who will open that country’s account in UEFA club competition. In the next round, held over the following two weekends, 14 more teams will enter. Clubs from Spain, Italy, England, France, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands and Greece will then take part in the final stage on 21/22 July and 28/29 July to meet the 14 surviving sides. The draw for all rounds will be announced on 23 April.

Newcastle success
Only clubs who finish in the four positions directly below the UEFA Cup places in their league will be eligible to compete, and the final list of entrants will be confirmed by 4 June. Last season Olympique de Marseille, AJ Auxerre, Hertha BSC Berlin, Odense BK, Ethnikos Achnas FC, NK Maribor, Grasshopper-Club, Kayserispor, SV Ried, FC Twente and Newcastle United FC won through to the UEFA Cup, with the number of available places expanded from three. Newcastle also became the first club to be awarded the trophy outright having been the only team of the eleven to progress past the UEFA Cup group stage.
