Intertoto Cup reaches final curtain
Saturday 26 July 2008The final edition of the UEFA Intertoto Cup concludes on Saturday and Sunday with many of the ties delicately poised after last weekend's opening legs.
Margin of victory
Of the eleven fixtures, only Grasshopper-Club and SC Braga enjoyed victories by two goals or more to put themselves in commanding positions, while SSC Napoli – back in UEFA club competition after a 14-year absence – and Primera División outfit RC Deportivo La Coruña will also feel confident of progress after away victories against Panionios GSS and Bnei Sakhnin FC respectively.
Slender leads
FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast and PFC Neftçi are among a quintet of sides who will be looking to protect their one-goal leads when they travel away. Saturn overcame 2006/07 Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart 1-0 last week, while fellow competition debutants PFC Neftçi defeated Romania's SC Vaslui 2-1. Stade Rennais FC, NAC Breda and IF Elfsborg were also 1-0 victors in the first legs.
All square
Elsewhere, former European Champion Clubs' Cup winners Aston Villa FC will be wary of an upset when they host Denmark's Odense BK with the score at 2-2, while Budapest Honvéd FC and SK Strum Graz is delicately poised at 0-0. The eleven winners of the final summer competition take their place in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round draw which takes place on 1 August.
