Eto'o spearheads Africa squad
Monday 26 February 2007The Africa All-Star squad for the 2007 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup has been finalised, with the most eye-catching name on the list being that of striker Etienne Emmanuel Eto'o, brother of FC Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o.
Forward thinking
The 18-year-old Eto'o, who plays his club football for 1 S.D. La Salle, is one of eight forwards in the Africa party, which features five Spain-based players including two other Cameroonian attackers: Valencia CF's Pierrick Dipanda and Lionnel Djimgou of Real Madrid CF. Two more strikers – RCD Espanyol's Saddik Boulaouali of Morocco, and Algerian Mohamed Fadel who plays for Olivenza CP – as well as CF Granada 74 midfielder Felix Donkor make up the Spanish quintet, while the other Europe-based tyro is forward Serigne Gueye of Atalanta BC and Senegal.
League of nations
The squad, incorporating players of 13 nationalities, will take on a Europe All-Star team in two matches at the Miniestadi, next to Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium, with the first leg on Tuesday evening and the decisive second encounter on Thursday morning. The African side will be coached by Ghana's Frederick Osam-Duodu and Shawki Gharib Baioumi of Egypt.
