Ajax add Urzaiz and Rommedahl
Friday 20 July 2007AFC Ajax were delighted to sign a "supersub" after recruiting the former Spain forward Ismael Urzaiz on a one-year contract as well as winger Dennis Rommedahl from Charlton Atheltic FC.
'Target man'
The powerful 35-year-old Urzaiz confirmed last month he would not be returning for a 12th season at Athletic Club Bilbao having joined the Basque club in 1996 from RCD Espanyol. "We've found our supersub," said Ajax technical director Martin van Geel. "Ismael will provide back-up to Klaas Jan Huntelaar. He'll act as a target man to break down defensive walls and has obviously agreed to play that role." Urzaiz won 25 caps for Spain, scoring eight times.
Rommedahl signs
Ajax, who have lost forwards Ryan Babel and Kenneth Perez in the last month and will compete in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, further bolstered their ranks with the signing of Rommedahl. The 28-year-old, who has scored 15 goals in 67 matches for Denmark, has signed a three-year contract with Ajax. Rommedahl played for PSV Eindhoven from 1997 to 2004 before moving to London.
