Scotland surge into early lead
Monday 17 March 2008Scotland are the early leaders of UEFA European Under-17 Championship Elite round Group 5 after a comfortable win against mini-tournament hosts Northern Ireland.
Fleck double
John Fleck opened the scoring on five minutes when Gordon Smith was pulled down in the box by Northern Ireland goalkeeper Conor Devlin and the captain stepped up to convert the penalty. Soon after Daniel Thomson's free-kick found Robert McHugh and although Devlin parried his first attempt he made no mistake with his second attempt. Fleck was on target again in the 18th minute with a superb volley, and although substitute Chris Curran pulled one back late on there was no way back for Northern Ireland. On Wednesday the home side face Slovenia, who drew 1-1 with Scotland's next opponents Wales.
