New Under-17 season begins
Friday 4 September 2009The 2009/10 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying round gets under way on Saturday, with 52 nations aiming to claim seven finals berths alongside hosts Liechtenstein. All the games can be followed live in the uefa.com matchcentre.
Belarus opener
Belarus, fresh from hosting the UEFA European Women's U19 Championship, will stage the earliest of the mini-tournaments, welcoming 2008/09 U17 semi-finalists Switzerland, the Czech Republic and San Marino for Group 13 from Saturday until Thursday. Germany, who took the title on home soil in May, begin on 23 October in Group 5 against former champions Turkey, Finland and hosts FYR Macedonia. Eight days later the final fixtures in Group 1 will be played, with Azerbaijan welcoming Serbia, England and Kazakhstan.
Road to finals
All teams finishing first and second in their groups will progress to the Elite round draw at 09.30CET on 9 December, along with the two third-placed teams with the best record against the leading pair in their section. The seven Elite round group winners in the spring will progress to join Liechtenstein in the finals, scheduled for 18 to 30 May 2010.
