The home side were hoping to pick up their only win in Group 4 but fourth-placed Wales dominated from the start and, having already gone close several times, broke the deadlock on 16 minutes. Gareth Bale got away down the left and crossed low for David Vaughan to turn in from close range. Liechtenstein came close to equalising when David Hasler was sent clear just before half-time but shot wide with only Boaz Myhill to beat. With ten minutes left Ramsey sent a free-kick past home goalkeeper Peter Jehle to break his senior duck for Wales.
