France finish with a flourish
Wednesday 14 October 2009France warmed up for the FIFA World Cup play-offs by concluding their Group 7 campaign with a routine home victory against Austria.
Major changes
With France having secured second place behind section winners Serbia on Saturday, and Austria already out, the coaches made 17 changes to teams which started at the weekend. Les Bleus were the least affected by the upheaval and capitalised on their first chance after 18 minutes, Florent Malouda dispossessing Stefan Maierhoffer before crossing for Karim Benzema to nod in the opener.
Gignac goal
Thierry Henry doubled the advantage in the 26th minute, scoring his 51st international goal from the penalty spot after Rod Fanni was brought down by Christian Fuchs. Austria, 3-2 winners against France in Vienna 13 months ago, gave themselves hope as Marc Janko reduced the arrears three minutes after the break, although substitute André-Pierre Gignac had the final say when registering France's third on 66.
