Montenegro record first competitive win
Saturday 10 October 2009Montenegro's final home match in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 8 brought about a first competitive victory for the country as they overcame bottom side Georgia 2-1 in Podgorica.
Debutant winner
The home side had been threatening the landmark success for much of the qualifying campaign, having drawn five of their first eights contests, and they finally broke their duck thanks to goals in either half by Radoslav Batak and debutant Andrija Delibašić. Vladimer Dvalishvili equalised on the stroke of half-time for the defeated visitors.
Vučinić absence
Montenegro, missing influential captain Mirko Vučinić, had much of the possession in the first half and took the lead in the 13th minute when Batak provided the vital touch following a Nikola Drinčić free-kick. Georgia goalkeeper Georgi Lomaia then did brilliantly to deny Stevan Jovetić and the visitors made the most of their reprieve when Dvalishvili scored from close range from Giorgi Merebashvili's free-kick. Delibašić, a 61st-minute substitute, had the final say, though, converting a pass from Jovetić from ten metres out on 78 minutes to write his name in the history books.
