Last-gasp Van Persie rescues Netherlands

The Netherlands dropped points for the first time in their FIFA World Cup qualifying Group D campaign, but had Robin van Persie's added-time penalty to thank for taking a point in Tallinn.

After going ahead after two minutes, the Dutch found themselves facing defeat following a pair of strikes from Konstantin Vassiljev. However, Raio Piiroja was dismissed after bringing down Van Persie in the area in the 93rd minute and the Manchester United FC forward did not fail from the spot to ensure his side have a six-point lead over Romania in the section.

After opening with six straight wins it was little surprise to see the visitors go ahead so early, Arjen Robben penetrating down the right before cutting on to his left foot and curling a trademark shot into the far corner.

Wesley Sneijder and Van Persie both failed to convert good chances to double the score and Estonia seized the opportunity to punish the Netherlands as Vassiljev gave Michel Vorm no chance with a well-placed effort on 18 minutes.

The Oranje continued to control the game but could find no way through and defensive confusion involving Bruno Martins Indi allowed Vassiljev the chance to lob in his second. Despite constant Dutch pressure it appeared Estonia would hold on but in added time Piiroja gained a second yellow card for his foul in the area and Van Persie drove in to deny Tarmo Rüütli's side a famous win.
