Meanwhile Portugal, who beat Les Bleus in glorious circumstances in the French capital last summer, took the lead against Sweden in Madeira through Cristiano Ronaldo. They subsequently went 2-0 in front but eventually succumbed to two efforts from Viktor Claesson and a late João Cancelo own goal.

Elsewhere, Netherlands caretaker coach Fred Grim's tenure started with a loss despite the Oranje going in front when Alessio Romagnoli turned into his own net inside ten minutes. Éder and Leonardo Bonucci struck later for the Azzurri.
