Alves names his Team of 2006
Monday 15 January 2007As Europe awaits the results of uefa.com's users' Team of 2006 poll on Friday, Sevilla FC star Daniel Alves has revealed his own personal pick of the year.
No choice
The Brazilian defender is hoping to be chosen in the final XI when the results are announced on 19 January and diplomatically refused to choose anyone to occupy his slot at right-back. However, the 23-year-old was quick to give credit to Sevilla team-mate Andrés Palop, handing him the No1 jersey in his all-star lineup.
Daniel Alves's Team of 2006
Goalkeeper
Andrés Palop (Sevilla FC)
I have had the great honour of working and playing alongside Andrés. He is great between the posts and has earned us plenty of points this season.
Right-back
No choice
I am sorry, but I won't pick anyone. I can't vote for myself, it wouldn't be right. But at the same time I don't want to give a vote to my opponents!
Left-back
Philipp Lahm (FC Bayern München)
I followed him during the FIFA World Cup finals and he was great - a very versatile left-back, he does everything.
Central defenders
Carles Puyol (FC Barcelona)
John Terry (Chelsea)
I like to watch Terry playing - he is very dangerous going forward. And Puyol is one of the best in his position. He deserved to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2006.
Central midfielder
Claude Makelele (Chelsea FC)
He doesn't leave anyone alone and he seems to never get tired.
Right midfielder
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United FC)
I played a friendly match against him once and he is so tough to defend against. He is one of the best dribblers in Europe - a very, very skilful player.
Left midfielder
Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona)
Adriano is my friend and has done a fantastic job this year, but I have to give my vote to Ronaldinho.
Attacking midfielder
Kaká (AC Milan)
When you mentioned Kaká, I didn't even need to hear who the other candidates were. He is one of the best players in the world.
Forwards
Thierry Henry (Arsenal FC)
Didier Drogba (Chelsea FC)
Henry has maintained the highest level during the last few years and deserves to be chosen. The other pick is Drogba. I often watch English football and I like him, the way he battles and the goals he scores.
Coach
Frank Rijkaard (FC Barcelona)
He won the Primera División and the UEFA Champions League, which is a lot. The man ended a long drought for Barcelona and I think he deserves the title of Coach of the Year.
