Hleb lands Belarussian award
Thursday 23 November 2006Arsenal FC midfielder Aleksandr Hleb has been crowned Belarussian Player of the Year for the fourth time, equalling the record set by the former USSR international Sergei Gotsmanov in the 1980s.
Consistent displays
The 25-year-old has been rewarded for his consistent displays for club and country in 2006, receiving the most votes in a poll conducted by the nation's leading sports newspaper Pressbol. Hleb finished comfortably clear of his international team-mate, the Ukraine-based FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk striker Sergei Kornilenko, while defender Aleksandr Kulchy from Russian side FC Tom Tomsk was third.
European run
Hleb enjoyed an impressive first season at Arsenal following his transfer from VfB Stuttgart, playing an integral part in the English team's run to the UEFA Champions League final. The former FC BATE Borisov playmaker has scooped the prize in four of the last five years, bringing him in line with Belarussian legend Gotsmanov who claimed the accolade in 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989.
