Montpellier Hérault SC took advantage of defeats for Olympique Lyonnais and FC Girondins de Bordeaux to move level on points with Les Gones at the Ligue 1 summit.

Duo defeated
Lyon held a one-point lead over Bordeaux at kick-off on Saturday but suffered their first defeat of the season as they went 2-0 down at home to FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, following a 17th-minute Jacques Faty goal and a late clincher from substitute Sloan Privat. Bordeaux could not take advantage as they lost 1-0 at AJ Auxerre to Valter Birsa's penalty 17 minutes from time.

Montpellier close in
Only goal difference now separates Lyon from Montpellier, who overcame AS Saint-Etienne 2-1. The visitors had Yoann Andreu sent off at the start of the second half and both Karim Ait Fana and Souleymane Camara pounced within 15 minutes to send Montpellier on their way, before Gonzalo Bergessio pulled one back with a penalty. Olympique de Marseille are now only three points off the lead after they won 3-0 at AS Nancy-Lorraine. AS Monaco FC can return to the top four on Sunday if they win at home to RC Lens, while sixth-placed FC Lorient play OGC Nice.

Boulogne relief
Lens, ahead of Nice on goal difference, fell into the relegation zone on Saturday as Le Mans UC 72 drew 1-1 with US Boulogne, who needed a last-gasp Fabien Robert equaliser to avoid replacing their opponents in the bottom three. Eight points back, Grenoble Foot 38 fell to their ninth defeat from as many games this season, 2-0 at Valenciennes FC. LOSC Lille Métropole moved on to ten points with a goalless draw at home to Stade Rennais FC.
