Manchester City FC missed the opportunity to go third and within three points of Premier League leaders Manchester United FC with a 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic FC on a day that saw Blackburn Rovers FC overcome rivals Burnley FC 3-2.

Zabaleta dismissal
Defeats for Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC on Saturday opened the door for City to further enhance their credentials as top-four pretenders but it was Wigan who took the lead at the DW Stadium. Shay Given could only parry Hugo Rodallega's shot on the stroke of half-time and Charles N'Zogbia was on hand to dispatch the rebound. The second half was only 63 seconds old when Martin Petrov converted Carlos Tévez's cross to reignite hopes of victory that were subsequently dashed by the 65th-minute dismissal of Pablo Zabaleta, forcing City to settle for a point and fifth place in the standings.

Rovers comeback
In the day's earlier north-west derby, Blackburn prevailed in their first top-flight meeting with neighbours Burnley since 1966. Robbie Blake put the visitors in front at Ewood Park with a superb shot but David Dunn, Franco Di Santo and Pascal Chimbonda all struck before half-time to give Sam Allardyce's side a decisive lead. Chris Eagles reduced the arrears in second-half added time but Burnley remain without a point away from Turf Moor all season, while Blackburn rise to 12th with their third victory of the campaign.
