Five-goal Chelsea storm out in front
Saturday 24 October 2009Frank Lampard scored twice as Chelsea FC surged to the Premier League summit with a 5-0 triumph over Blackburn Rovers FC, on a day when Tottenham Hotspur FC came unstuck at home against Stoke City FC.
Own goal
Carlo Ancelotti's troops swept aside Club Atlético de Madrid 4-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday and they were in equally hungry mood at Stamford Bridge, though only Gaël Givet's 20th-minute own goal separated the teams at half-time. It was a different story after the interval as Lampard hit his first Premier League goal since 18 August in the 48th minute, with Michael Essien registering from distance soon after and Lampard grabbing his second from the penalty spot following a Ryan Nelsen foul on Didier Drogba. Drogba himself then struck from close range as Chelsea moved two points clear of Manchester United FC, who visit Liverpool FC on Sunday.
Whelan winner
Third-placed Tottenham spurned the chance to turn up the pressure on the frontrunners as they suffered only their second reverse of the campaign. Glenn Whelan fired into the top corner against the run of play with four minutes left on the clock to ruin Harry Redknapp's first-year anniversary as Spurs manager. There was frustration for Aston Villa FC too as Martin O'Neill's ambitious side were held to a 1-1 draw at Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, for whom Sylvan Ebanks-Blake hit an 83rd-minute equaliser from the penalty spot moments after Gabriel Agbonlahor had given Villa the lead.
Wigan victory
Birmingham City FC earned themselves some breathing space by overcoming seventh-placed Sunderland AFC 2-1 to climb up to 14th, while Wigan Athletic FC leapfrogged Burnley FC into tenth spot by defeating fellow Lancashire outfit 3-1 at Turf Moor. In the tussle between 18th-placed Hull City AFC and basement outfit Portsmouth FC, Pompey claimed only their fourth point of the campaign with a goalless away draw.
