Winless streak
Liverpool headed into the game nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea FC and on the back of four successive defeats in all competitions. A fifth would have equalled their worst run of results since 1953 but Fernando Torres's consummate finish on 65 minutes gave them a deserved lead, the Spain striker drilling his near-post finish into the roof of the net.
Late dismissals
Both sides ended with ten men, United defender Nemanja Vidić dismissed after receiving a second yellow card on 89 minutes – his third consecutive sending off against Liverpool – before Javier Mascherano followed suit in added time. The Argentine's departure mattered not as the hosts subsequently increased their lead via David Ngog's assured finish to move within four points of Sir Alex Ferguson's charges.
West Ham comeback
Arsenal FC are one point better off than Liverpool despite squandering a two-goal lead against West Ham United FC. Goals from Robin van Persie (17) – the Dutchman's fifth in six games – and William Gallas (37) were cancelled out by Carlton Cole (74) and Alessandro Diamanti via the penalty spot with ten minutes left. There was still time for Scott Parker to be given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
Short-lived lead
Manchester City FC drew their third successive game to go sixth, within a point of Liverpool, after also surrendering a two-goal advantage to be held 2-2 by Fulham FC. Everton FC succumbed 3-2 to Bolton Wanderers FC, three days after their 5-0 reverse at SL Benfica in the UEFA Europa League. Ivan Klasnić opened his account for Gary Megson's side with the winner on 86 minutes.
