Michael Owen was on target as English League Cup holders Manchester United FC progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition on a night when Real Madrid CF were beaten 4-0 at third-tier AD Alcorcón in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey.

Neville dismissed
Owen scored the second in a 2-0 win at Championship outfit Barnsley FC, receiving Anderson's pass, nutmegging a defender and stroking the ball across the goalkeeper just before the hour. By that stage, Sir Alex Ferguson's much-changed side – who lost Gary Neville to a 63rd-minute red card but featured fit-again Gabriel Obertan for his long-awaited debut – were a goal to the good following Daniel Welbeck's sixth-minute header.

Guzan heroics
The Premier League's bottom club, Portsmouth FC, also advanced courtesy of a 4-0 home win against Stoke City FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC defeated Everton 2-0. Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers FC overcame Peterborough United FC 5-2 and Brad Guzan saved four spot-kicks, three in the shoot-out, as Aston Villa FC won on penalties at Sunderland AFC.

Spanish Cup
A Madrid side featuring Karim Benzema, Raúl González, Guti and Rafael van der Vaart were humbled by Alcorcón of Segunda División B. Madrid, who trailed 3-0 at half-time, have it all to do in the return leg on 10 November. There was no such trouble, however, for Sevilla FC who beat hosts CF Atlético Ciudad 4-2 thanks, in part, to two goals from Luis Fabiano. Also celebrating an away win were Club Atlético de Madrid, 2-0 victors at UD Marbella, while RC Recreativo de Huelva and Real Sporting de Gijón drew 1-1.

Top-flight casualties
In Germany, VfB Stuttgart and BV Borussia Dortmund had their cup hopes ended by lower division opposition at the round of 16 stage. UEFA Champions League contenders Stuttgart lost 1-0 away to 2. Bundesliga outfit SpVgg Greuther Fürth, while Dortmund suffered a 3-2 reverse at third-tier VfL Osnabrück. In the night's other ties, 1. FC Köln won 3-0 at SV Eintracht Trier 05 and FC Augsburg emphatically defeated 2. Bundesliga rivals MSV Duisburg 5-0.
