Chasers maintain Liga optimism
Sunday 1 November 2009Valencia CF and RCD Mallorca chalked up narrow wins to maintain their prosperous starts to the season but RC Deportivo La Coruña failed to follow suit as they were held by Real Sporting de Gijón.
Navarro strike
Valencia closed to within one point of third-placed Sevilla FC with a 1-0 victory away to Málaga CF. The only goal came after 69 minutes when Pablo's deep cross evaded goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa and David Navarro headed into the empty net. The hosts had their chances, though, with Victor Obinna clipping the bar from 20 metres then being denied late on by goalkeeper César Sánchez.
Webó winner
One strike was also enough for Mallorca to claim the spoils from their home match against Real Racing Club Santander, Pierre Webó (18) the player on target to move the Barralets up to fifth. Depor appeared on course for a 1-0 success too when Juan Rodríguez's header thumped off the bar and Lassad Nouioui converted the rebound on 41 minutes but the visitors claimed a point when Diego Castro rounded Daniel Aranzubía and finished with 21 minutes remaining.
Five-star Villarreal
Villarreal CF were given a much-needed boost as they won for only the second time in the Liga with a 5-0 rout of CD Tenerife, Joseba Llorente giving the Yellow Submarine a half-time lead before being one of four scorers after the break. Elsewhere, Real Zaragoza also picked up vital points with a 2-1 defeat of UD Almería while RCD Espanyol drew 1-1 with Real Valladolid CF.
