Sevilla FC and Valencia CF remain on the tails of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF after the former came from behind to overcome Villarreal CF 3-2 and Los Ché eased past Real Zaragoza 3-1.

Headed efforts
Sevilla built the perfect platform when Sergio Sánchez's chip was fired in by Luis Fabiano after nine minutes but Villarreal, hunting a third straight league win after an seven-game drought at the start of the campaign, hit back when Robert Pirès finished off a flowing move to add to his brace in the 4-1 victory against S.S. Lazio on Thursday. The Yellow Submarine led when David Fuster (59) rifled in only for headers from Fabiano and Frédéric Kanouté to complete a turnaround within seven minutes.

Poor defending
Valencia sealed their success against Zaragoza with three goals in the first 42 minutes. Juan Mata burst through on to David Silva's pass to open the scoring after 17 minutes and the visiting defence was equally accommodating for the next two goals. Pablo exploited a flawed offside trap to cross for Villa to make it 2-0 and the provider then turned goalscorer as he swept in a third after another breach in the Zaragoza back line. Abel Aguilar reduced the arrears slightly but Unai Emery's team are five points from the summit again and one shy of Sevilla.

Bilić winner
Real Sporting de Gijón and Athletic Club Bilbao occupy seventh and eighth positions after victories. Sporting did so courtesy of a solitary goal from Mate Bilić after three minutes against RCD Espanyol, while Athletic had Carlos Gurpegui (31) and Andoni Iraola (75), the latter from the penalty spot, to thank for their 2-0 success at Real Racing Club Santander. Xerez CD picked up just their sixth point of the season with a goalless draw at Real Valladolid CF, while UD Almería pulled clear of trouble following their 2-0 win against CA Osasuna.
