EURO co-hosts share spoils in Lodz

Poland 1-1 Ukraine

Poland 1-1 Ukraine
The UEFA EURO 2012 co-hosts stepped up their preparations for the finals with a draw in Lodz.

Qualifying for the tournament kicked into gear on Friday night but both Poland and Ukraine are already assured of places in the tournament as co-hosts. They therefore played out a friendly which looked set to go the way of the home side thanks to Ireneusz Jelen's opener but Yevgen Selezniov struck in added time to ensure the spoils were shared.

The opening period had few clear openings, though Poland could have taken a seventh-minute lead when Sławomir Peszko pounced on slack Ukrainian defence. He selflessly attempted to pick out Jeleń but his pass was intercepted and the chance had gone.

Indeed it was one of only a handful of opportunities for either side, Sebastian Boenisch twice chancing his arm on his debut. The visitors were restricted to their own ambitious efforts from Olexandr Aliyev as the threat from Franciszek Smuda's side grew as half-time approached. Indeed, just one minute before the interval, Jelen collected Jakub Błaszczykowski's pass, rounded the visiting goalkeeper and opened the scoring.

The AJ Auxerre striker spurned a fine chance to double his team's advantage just four minutes after the break and then shot wide as the pressure intensified on Ukraine. Jelen was denied for a third time, while Rafał Murawski and Robert Lewandowski both went close to adding a second. Ukraine stood firm, though, and Selezniov kept his cool to beat Artur Boruc and earn them an unlikely draw in added time.
